Sergiu Lucian Dumitrescu, age 64, passed away at his home on October 23, 2018 after a decades long illness.
He was born in Tulcea, Romania on October 10, 1954. In his 20’s, Sergiu developed kidney failure requiring long term dialysis, fell in love with his nurse, Angela Balasoiu, and they were married in 1982. In order to continue dialysis, with the help of Edie and Terry Oberley and Dr. David Hathaway, they immigrated in 1983 and proudly became U.S. citizens in 2000. Upon arrival they were welcomed by a group at Neenah’s St. Paul Lutheran Church who have remained lifelong friends.
Sergiu obtained a master’s degree from the University of Iasi and was a teacher of French and Russian. In Neenah, he worked in the trust department of Associated Bank for many years. Sergiu continued dialysis at home for over 37 years benefiting from Angela’s loving and meticulous care.
He is survived by his wife, Angela, of Neenah, his mother Natalia Dumitrescu and his sister Dr. Lori Cobzariu, both of Romania. Angela wishes to thank their many special friends and especially Dr. Kim Reiss Sager and the clinical staff at Fresenius Medical Care.
There will be a celebration of Sergiu’s life Saturday, November 17, from 4 to 7 PM at the Whiting Boat House, 98 Fifth St. in Neenah, with an invitation to all who knew and loved Sergiu. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the National Kidney Fund, 30E 33rd
