James Roger Mattes, age 79, of Marion, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on September 27th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 31, 1945 in Clintonville, WI, James was the beloved son of Wesley and Martha (Menge) Mattes. He grew up in Marion, where he developed a lifelong passion for building/fixing electronics, drinking Sun Drop, and taking care of his family. He graduated from Marion High School in 1963, and went on to work several different jobs, including as an auto body technician, and building supply distributor, and running his own amusement route where he would put arcades, pool tables, and dart machines in locations around the greater Marion area.
Known for his kind heart and sense of humor, James was deeply loved by everyone who knew him. He was a devoted Husband/Father/Grandfather, a loyal friend, and a source of strength and guidance to all who crossed his path. He enjoyed spending time with his Cozumel family, his grandchildren, and playing Cyndi Lauper on the touch screen jukebox that he developed and built. He brought joy and positivity to those around him.
James is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann, 6 children: Brian Mattes, Portland, OR, Todd (Lori) Mattes, Clintonville, Rudy Geronimo, Cozumel, Mexico, Daniel Mattes, Minneapolis MN, Michael (Mary) Mattes, Wittenberg, Eric (Torri Yaeger, fiancé) Mattes, Appleton, 8 grandchildren: Alondra, Belen, Maiah, Marlee, Zhenya, River, Reed, and Ruby, 2 sisters: Carol Lubinski and Sandy Cerveny, 3 brothers: Don Mattes, John “Pooch” Mattes, Paul (Sharon) Mattes, a brother-in-law, Robert ”Clyde” Aderman, and a sister-in-law, Judy Grunewald, who will continue to carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 of his siblings, Robert ”Bob” Mattes, and Mitzi Ziegler, and a brother-in-law, James ”Fred” Aderman.
Per James wishes, a funeral and visitation will not be held. The family will hold a small private celebration of life in James’ honor.
He will forever be remembered for his kindness, and willingness to do anything for his family, and his presence will be greatly missed.
