Donald H. Van Asten, 89, passed away on August 13, 2016 at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna after a long illness. Donald was born April 11, 1927 to John H. and Martha (Coonen) Van Asten at home in Vanderbroek, the fourth of 14 children. He served in the Korean War as a machine gunner in the Army and was a member of the American Legion. On July 7, 1953, he married Romunda K. Portmann at St. Mary Church in Stockbridge. Together they raised eight children on a dairy farm nearby. In his younger days he enjoyed square dancing while more recently he played the drums in the band at the nursing home.
Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years: Romunda K. (Portmann) Van Asten; his eight children: Barbara (Don Gosiewski) Van Asten, Sheila (Vincent) Galassi, David Van Asten, Mark (Karen) Van Asten, Jay (Debbie) Van Asten, Lisa Meier, and Jon Van Asten; his brothers: Ivo Van Asten, Leroy Van Asten, James Van Asten, and John E. Van Asten; his sisters: Grace Gebhardt, Sister Cyril Marie (nee Dorothy Van Asten), Betty Bast, Joyce (Phil) Bruecker, and Marcia (Ron) Siebers; 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents John H. and Martha Van Asten, his brothers: Gerald Van Asten, Cyril Van Asten and Kenneth Van Asten; and an infant sister Mary Van Asten.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at ST. MARY CHURCH in Stockbridge. The time of visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. On line condolences may be expressed at www.hotvcremation.com.
