Denney A. Gaines, age 72, of New London, passed into Eternal Life on November 3, 2015 at St. Joseph's Residence in New London. Denney was born October 5, 1943 in Rockville, Indiana, son of Cecil and Juanita (Jones) Gaines. After graduating from High School he attended Indiana State University at Terre Haute for one year, then enlisted in the US Air Force. During his four year enlistment, he was stationed in Hof, Germany and on Shemya, in the Aleutian Islands.
Upon his discharge, he settled in Madison, where he remained until relocating in New London in 1989. During his residency in New London, he is most likely remembered as a member of the maintenance staff at St. Joseph's, as a bartender at The Forrester in Appleton, and for searching throughout the area with his metal detector. He will also be remembered for his sense of humor, and for seizing every opportunity to run harmless "cons" on family members.
Denney is survived by a brother, David (Aleta) Gaines of Meeker, Colorado; a brother-in-law: Bill Leslie of Greenville; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters: Nancy Hubble, Carole Leslie, and Patsy Harden.
According to his wishes he is to be cremated and a brief gravesite ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family. For more information or to share a memory of Denney, please visit www.hovcremation.com.
The family extends their profound appreciation and gratitude to the staff at St. Joseph's Residence, and to Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice for the tender care and treatment they provided. We also extend our appreciation to Denney's neighbors who were always there to help.
